Nonprofits and Charities Representation

Nonprofit and charity representation is a key part of who we are and why we exist.

Family foundations are non-profits set up by a family to promote and sustain a family legacy. Many of our higher net-worth family clients form such foundations to promote and sustain their family’s legacy. Sometimes they choose to do the work through a charitable trust, which can be created during life or at the death of a family member who might then fund the non-profit. Some choose to form family foundations using traditional non-profit corporations which then seek exemption from the IRS. Families who run charities for a specific cause are organized as private operating foundations, and those which set up to benefit other charities set up as private foundations.

Our experience designing plans for high-net worth and charitable minded families provides a solid foundation to transition a portion of the family wealth to the family’s legacy or select charitable causes.

We have significant experience dealing with the IRS, from the beginning to the end of the exemption process. From the first stages of formation, we can provide valuable representation, including entity selection, drafting of formation documents, completion and assistance in completing IRS exemption applications, appropriate tax planning and director and officer fiduciary counseling. We have relationships with many helpful resources in the nonprofit world and can help your family as well in the operational phase of the family or private foundation.

If you are forming a family or a private foundation, or need assistance in running one of these we’d love to help you as you carry out your family legacy and improve your community and world.
